“When I am alone, I tend not to sing, there is already so much noise in the world. I sing only to share meaning - and singing is my means of expression. Words and their meaning are inseparable from the sound of the voice in their importance. Just breath made audible in the service of music.”

Maria Listra is a dynamic force in Estonia’s classical music scene—a classically trained soprano with a rich performance history. The Estonian vocal artist combines different aspects of music, theatre and culture in her extensive creative career - from chamber music to classical opera, from early Renaissance and Baroque music to contemporary pieces. Always with the single goal of being a captivating storyteller - staying true to the poet and composer.

“I am still on my way to honesty. I find it surprising that it’s such a broad concept. Becoming yourself requires the skill of a sculptor, but there is also something limited about sculpting. I have come to feel that you don't have to reach a clear definition, but rather spread out like a giant tree – into width, height, towards depth and distance. So that, which surrounds us, can carry us.”
